Tinnitus Treatment

April 23rd, 2012 by Trauma_Guide | No Comments | Filed in Trauma Symptoms

Article by eme michael

Tinnitus, an incessant ringing, swooshing, humming, or other sound in the ears with no outside source, is fairly common and is known to affect almost 2 percent of the population. More people have an occasional bout with tinnitus. If your tinnitus is severe and constant, you do want to find a “cure” and end your tinnitus, which can be maddening.

Tinnitus can be caused by something as simple as a buildup of wax blocking the ear canal. Some tinnitus remedies, certain antibiotics and cancer drugs can cause or worsen tinnitus. Tinnitus can be constant or can come and go. Tinnitus remedies include Aspirin for instance, but Aspirin can cause a ringing in the ears at higher doses. By identifying and eliminating, if possible, the medication responsible for the symptoms, you may stop the ringing for good.

Tinnitus from the Latin word tinnitus meaning “ringing” is the perception of sound within the human ear in the absence of corresponding external sound. Tinnitus is not a disease; but a symptom resulting from a range of underlying causes that can include: ear infections, foreign objects or wax in the ear, nose allergies that prevent (or induce) fluid drain and cause wax build-up.

When the underlying cause of tinnitus can be identified, it may be possible to cure tinnitus. For instance, if tinnitus is related to a disease of the ear and the disease is treated and cured, the tinnitus symptoms will generally disappear. Some would say their tinnitus has been cured because the symptoms have been eliminated. Others would claim their health problem was cured, thus eliminating the tinnitus symptoms.

Tinnitus Treatments

Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT) uses sound generators with a strict set of guidelines for effective tinnitus treatment. Counselors work with the aim of tutoring the patient on all the intricacies of the hearing systems of the ear and brain.

Tinnitus Retraining Therapy is a program intended to address and treat chronic tinnitus. TRT is based on a neurophysiologic model and aims to allow a patient to habituate to the tinnitus signal.

Causes of Tinnitus

Of course stress is only one of the underlying causes of tinnitus. There are many other causes such as inner ear damage / infection, meniere’s disease, general health problems (e.g. high blood pressure), noise-damaged hearing, and head and neck trauma.

Symptoms include headaches, aggression, hyperactivity, or an “unusual” or “unrealistic” ‘high’ that comes on soon after taking a Vitamin B supplement. If such symptoms regularly happen to you, read the label on the packaging; establish a connection of cause and effect in your own mind, by taking and then not taking the supplement, and seeing if the symptoms disappear.

Earwax serves as protection of the ear from fungi, bacteria, dust, water and other particles from penetrating the inner ear. It also serves as coating of the ear. Ear-toxic antibiotics placed in the middle ear can in addition be used in treating the vertigo.

The aging process causes the human body to breakdown in many ways and the ear isn’t exempt. Deterioration of auditory cells due to aging can cause tinnitus. For those aging adults who are suffering from hearing loss and tinnitus as an unwanted side effect due to getting older, a hearing aid may help.

Aging is another common cause of tinnitus. As people get older, they tend to become more fragile and nerve endings get damaged much easier than for a younger person. Presbycusis is the condition that causes hearing loss as well as tinnitus as a person ages.

The cure for tinnitus for objective tinnitus is difficult to enact and only preventative, natural treatments can work. The other category, subjective tinnitus, involves sounds that only the hearer can detect. It is not difficult to carry out a cure for tinnitus of the subjective version.

Stress is a large part of the Tinnitus vicious cycle. Stress can cause Tinnitus and you get stressed even more with Tinnitus. Help get rid of stress through exercise, e.g. going for long walks (especially with your dog), gentle running, swimming, etc. Also through listening to low relaxing music, indulging in a hobby, reading, etc.

Tinnitus is, by nature a multi-factorial medical condition. In other words, the disease can be caused by a combination of several causative points. There exist a large number of trigger issues as well, which can activate the symptoms. The basic approach adopted by the conventional treatment, and even the medications with herbal bases and remedial products prepared at home is faulty.

Areas outside the auditory factors also cause tinnitus. It includes hypothyroidism, hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidaemia, migraine, zinc and deficiency of vitamin B12. These factors are the triggers to tinnitus. Checking these factors may help us to prevent tinnitus.
